Prof. Nashaat Ahmed Deiab

Professor Nashaat Ahmed Deiab, PhD, is a distinguished expert in the field of Medical Radiation Physics and Radiation Protection. As a Professor of Medical Radiation Physics at the Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Department, National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, he has dedicated his career to advancing radiation therapy, ensuring radiation safety, and enhancing treatment accuracy for cancer patients.

Throughout his career, Professor Deiab has held several prestigious positions at the national, regional, and international levels. He is the President of the Egyptian Association for Medical Physics (EAMP), where he plays a leading role in promoting the development and application of medical physics in Egypt. His influence extends beyond national borders, as he also serves as the Vice President and National Delegate of the Federation of African Medical Physics Organizations (FAMPO) and is an active member of the International Organization of Medical Physics (IOMP). Through these roles, he contributes to the advancement of medical physics across Africa and supports international collaborations in radiation oncology and nuclear medicine.

In addition to his leadership in professional associations, Professor Deiab plays a critical role in maintaining high standards of radiation safety and quality assurance in medical institutions. As the National Coordinator for the IAEA/WHO (PAHO) RPLD Postal Dose Quality Audit Service for Hospitals at the Radiotherapy Level, he ensures the accuracy and reliability of radiation dosimetry in hospitals across Egypt. His expertise in radiation protection is further recognized through his membership in the Risk Management and Occupational Safety & Health Committee and the Supreme Committee for Radiation Protection at the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University, where he oversees compliance with safety regulations and best practices in radiation therapy.

Beyond his contributions to radiation protection, Professor Deiab also plays a pivotal role in the academic and scientific community. As a member of the Egyptian Universities Promotion Committee (EUPC) for the 14th session (2022–2025), he is responsible for evaluating and promoting professors and associate professors in the fields of oncology surgery, radiation therapy, internal medicine, and nuclear medicine. Additionally, he serves as a board member of the Medical Sciences Division at the Egyptian Syndicate of Scientific Professions, further shaping policies and advancements in medical sciences.

His expertise extends to various aspects of radiation dosimetry, treatment planning, and quality assurance in radiation therapy. He specializes in in-vivo dosimetry using silicon semiconductor detectors, ensuring precise radiation dose delivery to patients. His work includes acceptance testing, beam data collection, and modeling for treatment planning systems, ensuring that radiotherapy machines function with the highest accuracy. He is also actively involved in the quality assurance of therapeutic machines, CT simulators, treatment planning systems, and HDR brachytherapy units, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of radiation treatments. His expertise in dosimetric measurements, including CT Dose Index (CTDI), Dose Length Product (DLP), and Effective Dose (ED), further demonstrates his commitment to optimizing patient safety.

Professor Deiab is highly skilled in advanced radiotherapy techniques and treatment planning, including Total Body Irradiation (TBI), Total Skin Electron Irradiation (TSEI), and Intracranial SRS/SRT using micro Multi-Leaf Collimators (mMLC) and cones. His proficiency in CMS-XIO, MONACO, Eclipse, and Nucletron Treatment Planning Systems (TPS) allows him to implement cutting-edge techniques such as 3D Conformal Radiotherapy (3DCRT), Intensity-Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), and Stereotactic Radiosurgery/Radiotherapy (SRS/SRT/SBRT).

In addition to his clinical and technical expertise, Professor Deiab plays an essential role in radiation protection at both the hospital and departmental levels. He oversees the import, re-export, and source exchange procedures for HDR brachytherapy radioactive materials, ensuring compliance with international safety standards and regulatory requirements.

His passion for education and research is evident in his role as a teacher, supervisor, and examiner of medical physics courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including MSc and PhD candidates, as well as participants in the Egyptian Fellowship in Therapeutic Radiology. He also serves as a scientific reviewer for research papers and theses in radiation therapy physics, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field. His expertise is frequently sought in technical assessments and evaluations of therapeutic machines, radiation dosimetry systems, treatment planning systems, and CT simulators, ensuring that medical institutions are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
